Ontario Reports Legal

The value of selection, revision, introductory scoring and digestion of Ontario Reports (ORs) should not be underestimated. The reported case law continues to be an important service for the legal profession and research. The problem with legal relationships in general, and OR in particular, is their format, not the concept of reported case law. Nevertheless, and as I believe you are suggesting, this does not mean that the Ontario Bar Association`s ROs cannot provide better service and be more cost-effective for the Law Society by doing more than reporting cases and providing a vehicle for advertising. The ORs in their current design, both printed and especially digital, are a missed opportunity. Access to business is the subject of a series of legislative reports. Each case reported in the Ontario Reports has already been reported in many locations before being published in the Ontario Reports. Who really needs it. Now that the current reports are available in CANLII, we may need to fundamentally reassess the role of Ontario`s reporting. The legal content of Ontario Reports could add more than the selection, indexing and summary of court reports in Ontario.

If legal content were expanded and Ontario Reports remained free to the reader, Ontario Reports could be an even better way to keep lawyers informed and communicate with the Law Society, as well as an even more cost-effective vehicle for advertising. We could still keep bound volumes of Ontario`s full reports, perhaps for reasons of tradition and security. In addition, LexisNexis Canada will continue to publish weekly issues of Law Society of Ontario OR licensees in digital and print formats. The “paper portions” that are read for professional opinions, notices to law firms, the directory of experts and classified ads, as well as the reports on current decisions contained therein, are published weekly on the Digital Ontario Reports website. Previous issues will be available in pdf format from 26 March 2010. Stay up to date. Weekly portions of Ontario`s reports include official Law Society notices (i.e., practice directions, practice resources and Tribunal decisions), government communications of interest to the legal profession, fee schedules, lawyer announcements and advertising. I suspect you`re right, Gary, and the concept of “legal journalist” is not long for this world. However, some features of reports are worth migrating to what replaces reports. Most cases included in Ontario Reports are published within three months of being released by the court.

Members of the legal profession and the judiciary are invited to submit cases to the LexisNexis Canada Editorial Board for review for reporting in Ontario Reports. Is it not time to move on and forget that there was never a legislative report? This marks the end of an era in legal journalism in Ontario. The first volume of the Ontario Reports (OR) was printed in Toronto in 1882 under the supervision of the Law Society of Upper Canada (now the Law Society of Ontario). [i] Since then, despite name changes (Ontario Law Reports (1901-1931)) and publisher (including Butterworths, Canada Law Book and LexisNexis Canada), ROs have become an integral part of Ontario legal practice. Would we miss the curation of publishers who select cases to report? Would the legal blogosphere offer a sufficient alternative? Ontario Law Reports has served as a legal reporter for the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court of Ontario. The Consolidated Subject Index contains all the hooks of cases reported in specific volumes, arranged alphabetically and in accordance with Ontario`s Reporting Classification System. The index also contains a consolidated alphabetical table of cases. Great application.

Previous editions, search function – a must for lawyers and trainee lawyers. Overall, I find this app useful for checking job postings and career listings. The logo graphics for “Premier Guitar” appear when loading the app – a code/resource reuse artifact for the start page? Also, I`d like to see a feature related to disk space management – to keep a bunch of issues on the device and delete or archive the rest.
