This course provides a study of the legal research process, including primary and secondary sources of law and related research tools and rules of legal citation; Search with books and online tools; and provides a basic introduction to legal writing, including case descriptions and preparation of legal research notes. Applicants must submit TOEFL, PTE, or IELTS scores that meet the minimum program requirements listed below, unless they have earned a bachelor`s degree or higher from a regionally accredited U.S. institution or equivalent degree from a country on our list of exempt countries.
This course is the applied research project for the Master of Arts in Legal Studies. Students work with the supervising professor to complete an applied research project to be submitted for oral examination. Prerequisite: LS 5370 with grade “B” or higher and instructor approval. Your UHCL degree prepares you for the transition to law school at the graduate level. For a current paralegal, earning a bachelor`s degree will improve your chances of career advancement at law firms where their support staff require a four-year college degree. All professors in the Department of Legal Studies are members of the Texas State Bar. At UHCL, you can participate in the American Mock Trial Association`s national competition, help plan and implement the annual Constitutional Law Day program, join the Association for Legal Studies, or attend seminars sponsored by the Texas State Bar. The MLS degree is designed for non-lawyers who seek legal education and training, but do not intend to practice law. The 30-hour, 1-2 year program does not qualify students for a state bar exam.
This course is advanced reading and/or research on various topics in law under the guidance of a graduate faculty member. Can be repeated once with a different goal and teacher for up to 6 credit hours. Prerequisite: Instructor approval. Students who do not meet the completion requirements within the specified timeframe will be released from the program. The mission of the law degree program is to provide students with the opportunity to study law at the graduate level and to receive practical and paralegal training in state-of-the-art facilities. The program accomplishes its mission through the work of talented faculty and staff dedicated to the success of each student. Learn from our faculty of experts and get a comprehensive paralegal education while earning a marketable degree. This course is an in-depth study of the procedural and material foundations of ADR. The focus is on the procedures and practical applications of negotiation, mediation, arbitration and alternative judicial processes with integration of ethical and political issues. This course focuses on the Texas Rules of Civil Procedure and also provides students with experience in aspects of civil litigation in which a paralegal would be involved prior to trial. The student is introduced to the rules of initiating prosecutions, summonses and preliminary procedures.
The course also has a practical element that requires students to write a petition, design all kinds of discoveries, and summarize a statement. The 36-credit non-thesis program includes 27 hours of compulsory core courses and nine elective hours. The core program, which includes a cumulative research project and articling placement, provides training in essential paralegal skills such as legal research, legal writing, rules of procedure, case management, law firm technology, and legal ethics. Elective courses cover substantial areas of law. Students can choose three different areas of law for further study from elective courses covering up to ten different areas of law, including family law, criminal law, intellectual property, real estate, contract law, and many others. By choosing elective courses, students can also obtain a certificate of mediation issued by the department. Credit for any of the above transferable courses in paralegal programs not approved by the CAA is subject to the following requirements: Students must register for GLP 426 and complete 160 hours of paralegal assignments at an approved articling location. You must contact the Internship Manager prior to registering to verify the qualification. According to the American Bar Association (ABA), you don`t need to have a specific major to be admitted to law school. However, you should gain important skills, values, knowledge and experience to effectively prepare you for law school and a legal career.
